The Little Black Dress. It’s the perfect staple for any woman’s wardrobe.  It can be dressed up, it can be dressed down and it’s appropriate at any age–so practical!

damselpennyA while back, I found Shauna Miller’s blog, Penny Chic, which is all about creating designer looks for less.  Not only does she write the blog but she also recently launched a line of little black dresses that are being carried at Walmart, all for $20!  To celebrate the launch of  her line she asked five of her blogger friends to style one of each of the five dresses.

I was inspired by this outfit that Shauna’s blogger friend Jacey Duprie put together and featured in her blog, Damsel in Dior.  Jacey, Shauna and the other bloggers all  have an amazing sense of style and I highly recommend that you visit their sites.

While I love many of the outfits they feature in their posts, sadly, I can’t pull off their amazing 20-something style at 51.  Much like Shauna is inspired to create looks for less, I am also inspired to create looks that are more age-appropriate for a 50 year old woman  by using the looks that I see in fashion blogs and the pages of magazines on younger models at prices that I can afford.

In this photo, along with her Penny Chic dress, Jacie wears a striped jacket from Lovers + Friends x Because I’m Addicted, Charles David Shoes, a Celine a bag and sunglasses.   While I love every piece she selected, I don’t love the designer prices.  In fact, I’m kicking myself  because I waited too long to buy the dress, which of course was a steal — and it’s no longer available in my size.

Here is a picture of all of the bloggers from sydnestyle.com.

Originally I chose the  Eliza J Pleated Dress ($70.80),  it was the right length, it had a cap sleeve, and it really was a hybrid, if you will of the 5 little black dresses in the Penny Chic collection.  In as much as I like the dress, I wanted to feature a sheath dress which is more in keeping with the little black dress that Jacey Dupree wears, above.  So, I’ve gone back to the drawing board and here’s my updated look, which, once again,  I think is appropriate for a woman in her 50’s.   What do you think?  Would you wear this outfit?
